What Is the Difference Between Shayari, Ghazal and Nazm?
Most people use these three words as if they mean the same thing. They do not, and once you see the difference inside a real ghazal you will never mix them up again.
The short answer first, because most people searching shayari vs ghazal came here for exactly that.
Shayari is the whole art. Ghazal and nazm are two forms inside it. A sher is the smallest unit that everything else is built from.
One contains the other.
That is the answer. The rest of this page shows the difference between shayari ghazal and nazm with examples, because the terms only become obvious once you can point at them inside a real piece.
What is a sher, and what is the sher meaning?
The sher meaning is simple. A sher is two lines that complete one thought, and that is the whole definition.
Each of the two lines is called a misra. The first is the misra-e-oola, the second is the misra-e-sani.
This is why two line shayari travels so far on a status. It is not a shortened version of something longer. Two lines is the natural full size of a sher.
What is a ghazal, and what is its structure?
A ghazal is a set of shers that share a rhyme and a refrain, where every sher stands on its own. The ghazal structure is strict, and that strictness is the point.
That last part is the one people get wrong. A ghazal is not a story told across verses. You can pull the third sher out, put it on a status, and nobody will feel that something is missing.
Here is a full ghazal. Read it once normally, then read the breakdown under it, which points at the matla maqta radeef and qaafiya inside these exact lines.
Look at the second and third shers again.
That is the rule people break most often. If every line in a piece rhymes the same way, it is not a ghazal, it is a poem with a repeated ending. The matla is the only sher allowed to do that.
Ghazals were built for longing, which is why so much sad shayari comes out of this form. The repetition itself does something.
What is the nazm meaning in Hindi?
The nazm meaning in hindi is a poem that follows one idea from the first line to the last.
This is the exact opposite of a ghazal.
A nazm also does not need a radeef, a qaafiya, or a fixed rhyme scheme. It can have them. It usually does not, and it loses nothing by going without.
If you like this way of writing, most of the shayari on life works closer to a nazm than a ghazal, because a single idea is easier to sit inside.
Shayari vs ghazal, the difference in one place
Now that all three are on the page, the urdu poetry forms are easy to keep apart.
- Shayari is the whole art of writing verse in Urdu and Hindi. Everything below sits inside it
- Sher is two lines that finish one thought. The building block
- Ghazal is many shers joined by a shared rhyme and refrain, each sher independent
- Nazm is one poem on one idea, running start to finish, usually without a fixed rhyme
So shayari vs ghazal is not really a comparison at all.
The useful comparison is ghazal against nazm, and one question settles it every time. Can you pull out any two lines and post them alone?
Why do people mix these up?
Three reasons, and none of them are anyone's fault.
Social media flattened the words.
Film songs blurred it further. Plenty of songs called ghazals in the music industry are technically nazms set to music. They sound like ghazals because of the singing, not the structure.
The rules live in a language most readers do not study. Radeef, qaafiya, beher and maqta are Urdu terms carrying Persian traditions. Nobody teaches them in school, so people learn the poetry by ear and never learn the names.
Learning by ear is fine. But the names help once you start writing, because you can then hear what is wrong instead of only feeling it.
Which form should you write in?
Depends on what you are carrying.
- One sharp thought that finishes fast, write a sher and stop there. Do not stretch it
- The same feeling coming back at you from different angles, that is a ghazal. The radeef will do half the work
- One idea you want to walk through slowly, that is a nazm. Let the images build
A practical warning about ghazal structure. It looks easy and it is not. Beher is where beginners fall, because the metre has to hold across every line.
Most writers spend a long time on individual shers before their first ghazal holds together, and that is the normal order rather than a shortcut being missed.
More of all three go up in the shayari section as they get written. If you read English too, there is a poetry section as well.
