Sher शेर

A complete two line thought. The smallest unit of shayari, and often the whole point.

Ghazal ग़ज़ल

A set of shers sharing one rhyme and refrain, each able to stand on its own.

Nazm नज़्म

A poem that follows a single idea from the first line to the last.

Radeef रदीफ़

The word or phrase repeated at the end of each line. The echo you remember.

Matla मतला

The opening sher of a ghazal, the one where both lines rhyme.

Maqta मक़्ता

The closing sher, where the poet quietly slips in their own pen name.
